During my shifts as a nurse, I found that my hair falls onto my face, and I am unable to touch it, not wanting to contaminate my face/hair with infectious particles. Additionally, hair that is tied back either rubs all over the place or gets pulled out by the straps of the masks when donning and doffing! Hair Breakage? Not Cool!
When I first launched MediCats in 2020 I had worked a shift where every single patient I cared for was suspected to have Covid-19 (we're talking Delta wave) and promptly tested. So what does a creative nurse do at 10pm? Sew herself a scrub cap of course! And what does she do when 50 of her nursing and medical colleagues (including the Director of Emergency Medicine) ask for one too? Create an online store, and make scrub caps for all her mates! DUH!
Initially working through the peak of Melbourne's Covid outbreak, I have now also experienced Adelaide's Covid surge and have shipped scrub caps throughout Australia and across the world!
Although there is little evidence to suggest wearing a scrub cap prevents infectious particles passing through the fabric and onto the hair, it certainly keeps the hair in and therefore the germs out! We also know that our scrub caps help to disperse and reduce pressure from N-95 straps and reduce hair breakage.
Additionally, a disposable hair net could be easily applied over the top of the scrub cap if additional protection is required - especially during those cheeky aerosol generating procedures!
Our product range has now expanded to include compression socks, and I am planning a scrub top collection with an aim to launch mid 2023.
If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a message through the contact page on the site! I'd love to hear from you!
Should I also mention I'm a strong dog person...
Peace out, Medicats!
